Is Taiwan an independent country?

Taiwan enjoys de facto independence, however, it is not formally recognised by many countries. People in Taiwan elect their own leaders and the government controls a defined area of territory with its own military, passport and currency. Last week, US State Department's Taiwan page removed a previous reference to not supporting Taiwan's independence.
