Israel's General Staff Reconnaissance Unit, or 'Sayeret Matkal', is reportedly being prepped for a hostage rescue mission in the Gaza Strip. A special forces unit of Israel Defense Forces, the field intelligence-gathering unit is also tasked with counter-terrorism and hostage rescue beyond Israel's borders. The unit was established in 1957 at the initiative of its first commander, Avraham Arnan.
