Italy has tightened citizenship rules, limiting eligibility to those with Italian parents or grandparents. The new decree removes a provision allowing claims based on ancestors who were alive in 1861, when the country was formed. The move follows a 40% rise in citizenship claims abroad, but the change will not affect 60,000 applications that are currently under review.
