Italy's population stops declining after 12 years due to migration

Italy's population stabilised after 12 years of decline, as immigration nearly offsets the shrinking number of births, its statistics agency ISTAT said. Preliminary data showed ​resident population stood at 58.94 million on January 1, virtually unchanged from a year earlier. "Italy remains a country where only very positive net migration can offset ​a largely negative natural change," ISTAT said.
