National Conference MLA, Altaf Ahmad Wani, introduced a private member bill in the J&K Assembly, seeking the grant of free will to owners to cut walnut trees on their land. CM Omar Abdullah opposed it, saying that their indiscriminate felling could severely impact the region's economy and identity. He noted that J&K contributes over 90% of India's total walnut production.
