James Webb Telescope data reveals carbon in Butterfly Nebula
short by Neeraja Nath / on Thursday, 28 August, 2025
The James Webb Space Telescope revealed signs of carbon-based molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) forming inside core of Butterfly Nebula (Bug Nebula). Webb data showed that a dusty torus surrounds the core, which is primarily composed of crystalline components. The discovery shows "life molecules" can form in dying star and helps explain how organic matter forms in space.
