Japan buys island for $146 mn to conduct military drills with US

Japan agreed to buy uninhabited Mageshima island, around 30 kilometres off southwestern coast, for $146 million from a developer to conduct military drills with the US, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said. Japan and the US agreed in 2011 to relocate American flight training operations from Iwo Jima, which is around 1,200 kilometres south of Tokyo.
