Japan navy appoints 1st woman to command warship squadron

Ryoko Azuma was on Tuesday appointed as the Commander of the First Escort Division of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, becoming the first woman to command a warship squadron. She will command four ships with a combined crew of 1,000. Adding that she wants to inspire others, the 44-year-old said she will concentrate her energy on fulfilling her duties.
