Japan recorded an increase in suicide rates during 2020 for the first time since 2009, the Health Ministry said. It added that 20,919 people died by suicide in 2020, up 3.7% from the previous year, with 14% more suicides recorded among women. "The coronavirus pandemic forced people into unusual circumstances," a health ministry official said.
