short by Ishita Ranganath / on Thursday, 21 May, 2026
A fire destroyed part of the Daishoin Buddhist temple complex, the Reikado Hall, which housed the 'eternal flame' for 1,200 years. The authorities said the fire may have been caused by the flame, according to the Japan Times. This is similar to an incident 21 years ago when the flame was moved after the hall was burned down in 2005.
