President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI), accepting the recommendation made by the outgoing CJI NV Ramana. The 48th Chief Justice of India, Ramana, will retire on August 26. Justice Lalit was appointed judge at the Supreme Court in 2014. He had enrolled as an advocate in June 1983.
