'Kanyadan' not essential for Hindu marriages: Allahabad High Court

The ceremony of 'Kanyadan' is not essential for solemnising marriages as per the Hindu Marriage Act, the Allahabad High Court has said. The Act provides for only 'Saptpadi' (seven steps around sacred fire) as an essential ceremony, the court said. 'Kanyadan' refers to the ritual of a father giving his daughter in marriage to the groom.
