An environmentalist from Karnataka, Saalumarada Thimmakka has planted and tended to 384 banyan trees along a four-kilometre highway stretch between Kudur and Hulikal. It is believed that Thimmakka began planting the trees in lieu of children, as she and her late husband were unable to conceive. She has received numerous awards, including the National Citizen's Award of India.
