Basant Panchami, observed on Magha Shukla Panchami, is now largely marked by kite flying and leisure. In Punjab, Saraswati puja, once the heart of the festival, is missing from many homes. Religious leaders are expressing concern that northern states are drifting from worship of the goddess of knowledge, weakening reverence for learning, wisdom, cultural discipline over the past several decades.
