Kolkata faces growing flood risk amid climate change threat

Kolkata’s low-lying geography makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding, while climate change is increasing risks from extreme rainfall, sea-level rise and coastal hazards. India’s district-level climate risk assessment, prepared using IPCC framework, includes flood-risk mapping for Kolkata and West Bengal. Recent rain & widespread waterlogging have further highlighted the city’s vulnerability.
