A 61-year-old Kolkata man has become the first person in the world to contract a fatal plant fungal disease. The man, who worked as a plant mycologist, visited hospital after suffering from a hoarse voice, cough, fatigue and difficulty in swallowing. Scans showed he had paratracheal abscess in his neck and testing of pus samples revealed infection by Chondrostereum purpureum.
