short by Sourav Kumar / on Thursday, 30 April, 2026
Scientists at Imperial College London are engineering fast-growing “synthetic lichens” that could help produce food during space missions. These lichen-like systems are found as a crusty growth on rocks and trees, which use cyanobacteria to convert carbon dioxide and light into sugars.
