Life may have emerged independently twice on Earth: Study

A study published in 'Science Advances' suggested free-living cells may have emerged independently in bacteria and archaea after they split from a common ancestor. The study, challenging single-origin theory, examined protein structures of core metabolic enzymes in genomes of bacteria and archaea. It found that both groups evolved distinct enzymes to perform same essential metabolic reactions.
