According to linguists, both Kannada and Tamil have a common ancestor - that is proto Dravidian. Both are major languages of the Dravidian family, but are believed to have been developed as separate branches of proto Dravidian. As the languages have a common ancestor, they share similar grammar structures, have same word formation and words with common etymology.
