AFRL awarded Lockheed Martin a $33.7 million contract for the JETSON High Power program, which aims to advance high-power nuclear electric power and propulsion technologies and spacecraft design. It will use a fission reactor to generate heat, which is then transferred to Stirling engines to produce up to 20 kWe of electricity, four times more powerful than conventional solar arrays.
