short by Vani Vivek / on Thursday, 21 July, 2016
The record for the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth, as recognised by UN's World Meteorological Organisation, was set on July 21, 1983 at -89.2°C. This temperature was recorded at Russia's Vostok research station in Antarctica. The extreme cold is said to have resulted from absence of solar radiation, calm air for a long duration and the station's high elevation.
