Maharani Gayatri Devi was more than a glamourous icon—she worked for the upliftment of women and entered politics. When she contested the elections in 1962 on a Swatantra Party ticket, she won by the biggest ever majority —192,909 votes. She was jailed during the 1975 Emergency declared by PM Indira Gandhi. She spent about 6 months in Tihar jail.
