Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated on January 30, 1948, in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse who was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha. Godse shot Gandhi in the chest thrice when he was outside Birla House where a prayer meeting was going to take place. Before this, there had reportedly been five unsuccessful attempts to kill Gandhi.
