Mali has closed schools and universities nationwide until November 9 due to a severe fuel shortage. The crisis follows a blockade imposed in early September by militants from the al-Qaeda-backed group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, which has stopped fuel imports from neighbouring countries. Authorities said they were "doing everything possible" to resolve the crisis.
