Nelson Mandela was sentenced to five years in prison on October 25, 1962 in connection with his movement against apartheid. He was convicted for unlawfully exiting the country and for incitement to strike, and kept in the political prison of Robben Island off the coast near Cape Town. Later, he became South Africa’s first President.
