Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis lauded the Central government's decision to recognise five languages including Marathi as "classical" and said that Marathi will now be known as an elite language. "This is a day to be written in golden letters. I express my gratitude to PM Narendra Modi," he added. Bengali, Pali, Prakrit, and Assamese also got 'classical language' status.
