Nitisinone, a drug used to treat rare metabolic disorders, makes human blood deadly to mosquitoes and could help in fight against malaria, researchers found. When a mosquito drinks blood containing nitisinone, it blocks an enzyme which prevents the insect from digesting blood, causing them to die. Researchers are working to determine optimal dosage of nitisinone for mosquito control.

The US, in its 2025 Annual Threat Assessment report, named India and China as "sources of precursors and equipment for drug traffickers". As per the report, fentanyl and other synthetic opioids remain the deadliest drugs trafficked into the US. Mexico-based transnational criminal organizations remain the dominant producers and suppliers of illicit drugs for the US market, the report said.
