The nation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the launch of India’s first rocket – an American-made Nike-Apache rocket – on 21 November 1963. Sections of the rocket were transported to the launching station on cycles and bullock carts. The launch pad itself was a church in the fishing village of Thumba on the outskirts of Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
