Mass extinction paved the way for 'Age of Fishes': Study

A new fossil study reveals that the "Age of Fishes" (Devonian period) began after a major mass extinction about 445 million years ago. The survivors of this mass extinction diversified into jawed vertebrates that became the dominant group while jawless ones diminished in numbers. The extinction caused an ecological reset, letting early vertebrates fill niches left by conodonts and arthropods.
