The Supreme Court observed that replacing a time tested and uniformly followed method of selecting Assistant Professors in higher education with Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) based written examination is unacceptable. It held that the giving away of a rigorous criteria laid down in the UGC regulations and the complete elimination of viva voce is arbitrary.
