Former MI6 spy Aimen Dean said on the podcast that meeting Osama bin Laden in August 1996 was a disappointment. The compound was made of mud and straw, with aides looking dishevelled like refugees. Bin Laden’s robe was heavily creased and his headcloth simply wrapped. In Saudi Arabia, Dean said, he would have assumed the man was a beggar.
