Miners at the gold mining town of La Rinconada in Peru work for free, spending 30 days working for a mining company in return for one-two days when they can mine gold for themselves. Recent efforts to change the system were opposed by the miners themselves. La Rinconada, at 5,100 metres above sea level, is the word's highest permanent settlement.
