MIT scientists create 'mini livers' as alternative to transplants

MIT engineers have developed "mini livers" that can be injected into the body to take over functions of a failing liver. In a study, researchers showed that these cells could remain viable in the body for at least two months. "It can provide an alternative to surgery, but...can also...provide support until a donor organ becomes available," researcher Vardhman Kumar said.
