Mountbatten was 1st Governor-General of free India

Lord Mountbatten was the first Governor-General of independent India, and served the office till June 1948. Having overseen the partition and transfer of power as the last viceroy of British India, Mountbatten stayed back in India for 10 more months. Notably, the British officer was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army on August 27, 1979.
