A panchayat comprising Saharia tribals from around 27 villages in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur has banned women from using mobile phones, claiming it was for their safety. The panchayat members claimed women were coming in contact with outsiders and marrying them because of phones, risking their exclusive land rights. Women caught using phones will be punished with fine or ostracisation.
