In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court on Wednesday gave Muslims the right to adopt a child despite their personal law prohibiting it. The personal law dictate cannot stultify the right to adoption conferred by law, SC said. The judgment comes on an 8 year old petition by Shabnam Hashmi, who had approached SC after being refused permission to adopt.
