Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali said his films often flop on release and become cult favourites later. On the podcast, he explained his stories carry a sophistication he can't yet make simple, so audiences need three or four viewings to fully understand them. By the time they do, he noted, the box-office meter has already turned off.
