NASA captures 'Siberian snowman' in remote Russian Arctic

NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite imaged a giant "snowman" in Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula near Billings, a chain of five frozen lagoons formed by thermokarst activity in permafrost. Captured in June 2025 amid Arctic cold, the natural formation highlights climate-sensitive landscapes and the value of space-based monitoring for tracking permafrost thaw and environmental change.
