New research using NASA’s TESS telescope shows that ageing stars, known as red giants, often destroy nearby planets as they expand. Astronomers found very few close-orbiting planets around these stars, suggesting many are swallowed up during the process. The study raises questions about Earth’s distant future when the Sun eventually becomes a red giant.
