Neanderthal genes increase risk of serious COVID-19: Study

A Neanderthal-inherited DNA segment dating back over 50,000 years triples the risk of severe COVID-19 in modern humans, researchers stated. Approximately 16% of Europeans and half of South Asians carry these genes presently. Researchers discovered the gene's origin while comparing human DNA to Neanderthal genomes. The DNA linked to severe illness was found to resemble one in Croatian Neanderthal.
