Flight attendant Neerja Bhanot was the youngest and the first female recipient of Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. Neerja, aged 23, lost her life while trying to save the lives of passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked PanAm Flight 73 on September 5, 1986, and was conferred with the award posthumously.
