Human rights activist Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for peacefully destroying the apartheid regime in the country. Notably, United Nations observes July 18 as 'Nelson Mandela International Day' in recognition of the South African leader's contributions to democracy, freedom, peace and human rights around the world.
