New honey bee species living nearly a meter underground

Entomologists from UAS Bengaluru, Nagaland University, and CAU Imphal discovered Tetragonula nagalandensis, a new stingless bee living up to 80 cm beneath the soil in Medziphema, Nagaland. This subterranean find brings India's total count of known stingless bee species to 19. It is shielded by layers of protective wax to thrive in the damp, subterranean soil of Northeast India.
