Scientists have identified a new form of ice, called Ice XXI, that can exist at room temperature under extreme pressure. Scientists from the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science used an X-ray free-electron laser to discover the previously unknown phase. Ice XXI forms when water is compressed to about two gigapascals (20,000 times atmospheric pressure) in only 10 milliseconds.
