A new prehistoric cat species, Magerifelis peignei, dating back 15.5 million years, has been identified in Spain. Belonging to a small cat subgroup, it exhibited predatory behaviour akin to Iberian lynxes that suffocated "medium-sized prey" with throat bites. Fossil remains, including well-preserved partial jaw bones and nearly all teeth (excluding incisors), were unearthed in 2007.
