Osaka Metropolitan University and Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology researchers observed the quantum Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) for the first time. KHI was predicted decades ago but not previously seen in quantum fluids. The instability produced vortex patterns called eccentric fractional skyrmions, whose crescent shapes were compared to Moon in Van Gogh's The Starry Night.
