New snake species found in Meghalaya

A new burrowing reed snake, Calamaria garoensis, has been discovered in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. Long mistaken for a known species, it was identified using DNA and morphological analysis. Found only in the region, the discovery highlights Northeast India’s rich yet underexplored biodiversity and need for conservation.
