Kerala's iconic Thrissur Pooram festival will be celebrated without its traditional fireworks display this year. The decision was taken after 14 people died in an explosion at a firecracker unit in Thrissur's Mundathikode. Another key ritual, Kudamattam, which involves the exchange of parasols (umbrellas) atop decorated elephants, has also been shortened from one hour to 15 minutes.
