Nuclear clocks tick for the first time

Two independent teams from China's Tsinghua University and Austria's Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology have built the world's first working nuclear clocks. While atomic clocks keep time by tracking a circling electron, these new clocks use the atom's core, or nucleus, instead. Built using thorium-229 and a laser, they could outperform atomic clocks and help spot dark matter.
