Nutella was made as a solution to cocoa shortage after WWII
short by Sanira Mediratta / on Sunday, 5 February, 2017
Nutella was invented by pastry chef Pietro Ferrero from Italy as a solution to the shortage of cocoa supplies following World War Two (WWII). He created the paste using hazelnuts, sugar and just a little bit of cocoa, and named the product 'Giandujot', after a local carnival character. The name 'Nutella' was suggested by his son in 1964.
